Multicultural Issues in Schools

Catalog description

This course provides graduate students with a comprehensive introduction to multicultural issues, broadly defined to encompass racial, ethnic, cultural, and linguistic diversity, as well as gender, sexual identity, and social class. The course examines theoretical, empirical, and practical literature relevant to working with diverse clients, with a focus on the development of cross-cultural competencies. Multicultural issues are analyzed in relation to the delivery of services by school professionals, including assessment, counseling, and consultation. Candidates will explore how these issues impact families, classrooms, and schools, with a particular emphasis on culturally and linguistically diverse children from early childhood through adolescence. The course is integral to the multicultural and bilingual specializations for school counselors and the bilingual extension for bilingual pupil personnel. Includes 20 hours of field experience if not scheduled for field experience later on in the program.
