Catalog description

This course will integrate the study of students who are language-learning disabled and of the multifaceted role of the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) in school settings. A focus of the course will be the impact of language disorders in school-age children and adolescents on their acquisition of academic skills required for the development of literacy skills, written language, cognitive, and social aspects of communication. An emphasis will be placed on the relationship between spoken and written language and the roles and responsibilities of the school-based SLP related to reading and writing in school-age children and adolescents. A comprehensive overview of service delivery models; collaborative management strategies; informal and formal assessment; national and state legislation and regulations; rights and responsibilities of staff, parents and teachers; and Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) planning will be provided.
