Sociology of Education
Mercy University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Sociology of education deals with the many ways society and culture influence the growth of knowledge, the process of education, and academic achievement. At the core of sociology of education is the assumption that knowledge and education are, to a significant extent at least, “social” in nature. This course will cover theories and methods in the sociology of education that concern the sociocultural determinants of formal schooling, academic achievement, inequality in education, and so on. In addition, philosophical and historical perspectives will also be considered since sociology in general and sociology of education in particular invariably interconnect with other important disciplines in the sciences and the humanities.
