Catalog description

This course prepares candidates to assess, diagnose, and respond to reading difficulties for both language comprehension (e.g., background knowledge, vocabulary, language structures, verbal reasoning) and word recognition (e.g., phonological awareness, decoding, sight recognition) to understand how skilled reading develops-and where it can break down. Through analysis of formal and informal assessments, candidates will learn to identify specific deficits across both strands, including hallmark indicators of dyslexia such as phonological processing delays, impaired decoding, and limited orthographic mapping. Candidates will administer diagnostic protocols, interpret data, and design responsive instructional plans that address the full spectrum of reading development. Candidates will participate in 12 hours of field experience.
