Algebraic Reason&ProblemSolv
McKendree University · GRAD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course develops candidates' capacity to teach algebraic reasoning through conceptual models, multiple representations, and strategic problem-solving. Emphasis is placed on helping learners transition from arithmetic to algebraic thinking using patterns, functions, equations, and contextual modeling appropriate for elementary learners. Candidates will explore how language, manipulatives, visual models, and real-world scenarios support the development of algebraic generalizations and flexible thinking. Grounded in the Standards for Mathematical Practice, the course integrates all eight practices. Candidates will design instructional tasks that activate these practices, analyze student work for evidence of mathematical thinking, and scaffold discourse that promotes deep understanding.
