Catalog description
This course examines how educators can foster deep mathematical understanding through five modes of representation: symbolic (equations), linguistic (mathematical language), contextual (real-world situations), visual (graphs, diagrams), and physical (manipulatives). Candidates will explore how these representations support conceptual development, differentiation, and transfer across grade levels and learner profiles. Emphasis is placed on designing instruction that connects representations, scaffolds mathematical thinking, and promotes equity in access to rigorous content. Candidates will analyze research-based models, develop instructional tasks, and reflect on how representation choices impact learning outcomes.
