Catalog description

This course provides an overview of counseling approaches and unique therapeutic considerations in working with individuals from various populations. Particular attention will be paid to the ways in which race, ethnicity, social class, gender, sex, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, and physical difference impact individuals' life experiences and sense of self, as well as their experiences in therapy. Individuals' experiences with privilege and oppression in U.S. society, and the resulting impact on identity development will also be explored. Students will be encouraged to reflect on their own areas of discomfort, as well as their experiences with privilege and oppression.
