Catalog description

Emergency Medical Technician is an in-depth study of the identification and treatment of people with illness and traumatic injuries. It is intended for those who are involved with fire/rescue agencies or private ambulance services or those who wish to pursue a career in emergency medicine in a prehospital setting. Training is conducted in cooperation with the Illinois Department of Public Health Division of Emergency Medical Services and Highway Safety, in accordance with the U.S. Department of Transportation's EMT National Standard Curriculum. The training promotes an assessment-based approach to identifying illness or injury and developing an appropriate plan of treatment within the limitations of basic life support practices, including the use of prehospital patient care and rescue equipment. Instruction includes classroom lecture, practical skill demonstration in a lab setting, 24 hours of direct patient care in a hospital emergency department, and 16 hours of direct patient care in an ambulance. Upon completion of the course the students are eligible to take the National Registry EMT competency exam, which is required to demonstrate eligibility for EMT licensure in the state of Illinois. Licensure is required for employment as an EMT. Salaries vary greatly from volunteer/paid-per-call compensation to full-time employment. (1.2-Articulated) NOTE: Uniform requirements for clinical work are dark slacks (no jeans), dark shoes, and MCC issued EMT shirt, stethoscope and watch with a second hand. Students must be 18 years old and provide evidence of a high school diploma or GED to take the National Registry EMT exam. Students are required to provide proof of vaccination for TB, MMR or MMR titer, Varicella or varicella titer, TDAP, Hepatitis B or Hepatitis B titer, and flu within the first 10 days of the course.
