How do we build cities so that those living there thrive? Large global cities, like Washington, DC, serve as seats of power, capitals of enterprise, and leisure destinations for millions. The multiple functions of a city like Washington, DC, are a reflection of the interplay between planning priorities and input from community voices, which can impact the way a city is experienced by those who live, work, and play in local neighborhoods. In this course, we examine urban development strategies, urban planning practices, and grassroots mobilization efforts that aim to construct a just and inclusive city. We will examine the best practices of community building, place-making, and urban change in cities around the world. Minimum grade of D required to pass the class. Prerequisite: SOC 121, SOC 131, or SOC 131. Liberal Arts Core Designation: Social Science (SS), Depth in Sciences (DSCI).
