Comparative Social and Political Philosophy

Catalog description

A philosophical inquiry into society and politics from a comparative perspective. Western philosophical thought will be explored in comparison with non-Western philosophical thought, which may include Chinese, Indian, African, or other traditions. Topics may include theories of justice, freedom and responsibility, human nature, the relationship between the individual and the state, political authority and stability, democracy and representative government, and human rights, among others. Prerequisite: One prior course in philosophy. Liberal Arts Core Designation: Depth in Faith and Reason (DF&R).
