AI: Trust, Bias and Societal Impacts

Catalog description

The practice of Artificial Intelligence (AI) increasingly involves making choices that impact real people and society at large. This course covers an array of ethical, societal, and policy considerations in applying AI tools to high-stakes domains, such as employment, education, lending, criminal justice, medicine, and beyond. The course will discuss the pathways leading to or amplifying problematic decision-making practices including those exhibiting bias, inscrutability, and invasion of privacy. The course also examines recent technological methods and frameworks to capture and alleviate these concerns to achieve trustworthy AI applications. Students will learn to think critically and broadly as well as when and how to partially remedy ethical and societal concerns around the use of AI in socially-sensitive decisions. Students require a minimum grade of C. Prerequisite: IT 150 with a grade of C or higher
