Provides a sociological introduction to patterns of family formation and contemporary trends in family life. Examines historical and contemporary contexts that shape the meaning and importance of the family in society. Examines culture, race and ethnicity, religion, social class, gender and sexual orientation to understand how families define, form and maintain relationships.
