Investigates fundamental questions about the nature of reality, especially those not amenable to purely empirical resolution. Possible topics include: theories of substance, the nature of physical objects, the existence of the soul, essences and natural necessity, time and space, the reality of possible worlds, the existence of universals, the nature of causation and the distinction between primary and secondary qualities.
