Catalog description

Delves into sport, a rich site for philosophical inquiry into fundamental questions about human nature, ethics and society, drawing on both classical philosophical texts and contemporary scholarship. Analyzes the meaning of play, the pursuit of excellence, the nature of competition, the role of rules in shaping fair play, and such ethical and political issues as gender equity, doping and commercialization. Equips students to engage thoughtfully with debates about the purpose of sport, its role in reflecting and challenging cultural value, and its significance in individual and collective life.
