Catalog description

Design methodology and the criteria for the selection of materials from the four classes of materials (metals, plastics, ceramics and composites) are discussed. Criteria include processing requirements, mechanical properties, and environmental resistance. A rationale for selecting materials based on materials selection charts is presented. The process-structure-property relationship for ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, plastics, ceramics and composites is presented from the point of view of understanding selection criteria. Considerations of cost and availability are also taken into consideration. 3 hrs. lec.
