Catalog description

This course builds upon foundational principles of occupational therapy practice by focusing on mental health and human occupational performance across the lifespan, emphasizing therapeutic use of self, development of professional reasoning, and effective engagement in individual and group interventions. Students will apply occupational therapy models, theories, and frames of reference to guide intervention planning while learning to recognize and respond to symptoms and behaviors, address clients' spiritual, cultural, and psychosocial needs, and understand the influence of sociopolitical factors, health disparities, and barriers to access. Professional skills in assessment and documentation will be developed to clearly communicate clinical reasoning, support reimbursement, and demonstrate the value of occupational therapy services across traditional and emerging mental health practice settings.
