Catalog description

This introductory course in music from around the world will introduce students to topics and techniques in Ethnomusicology and is open to all students. After an initial survey of the techniques and practices in the study of world music cultures, the course will explore specific cultures in the Pacific basin, Africa, and Asia. Students will develop presentation projects in teams based upon a selected music culture. A museum visit to study the musical instrument collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art will be an important component of the course.
