Storytelling is a fundamental part of human identity and the human experience. In this course, students explore the varied modes of 21st-century storytelling. Students will examine various elements of narrative development so they can analyze and communicate their own stories as well as report the stories of others. Gaining an understanding of oral, written, and visual storytelling techniques, students will construct personal narratives, interviews and data-based articles, resumes and cover letters, and oral histories or spoken word assignments. In this process, students should gain skills in identifying their audiences, crafting persuasive narratives, and sharing stories through different modes of communication. Additionally, the course will engage in discussions regarding context and power, with the goal of helping students understand that story is a potent tool in advocacy and social impact.
