This course is designed to develop participants' skill in the assessment, diagnosis, and evaluation of Students with Disabilities. Course participants will learn the purpose of formative and summative evaluations as it relates to the development of an Individual Education Program (IEP) that is mandated by IDEA. Students will become familiar with the tests that are used in special education and psycho-educational process to evaluate the learning domain, as well as in the understanding of the statistics that apply to test interpretation. Both formal and informal assessment strategies will be taught that provide a holistic understanding of the child's learning needs, as well as how these needs are translated into an effective learning plans, namely the IEP. In addition to the didactic instruction, students will be responsible for evaluating an individual with special needs, and preparing a final project based upon their selection of appropriate test instruments and observation of the child within their instructional setting. Acquisition of these understandings and skills require that the course participant has access to an individual with learning needs in an educational setting. K-12.
