Catalog description
This is an introductory course to study the morphology and physiology of bacteria and other microbes for nursing students and other health professionals. It will emphasize the history of microbes and focus on different aspects of prokaryotes such as structure and physiology. The function of various classes of antibiotics used against bacteria will be discussed. Other microorganisms such as viruses, fungi, protozoa and helminth will also be reviewed briefly. Basic immunology will also be introduced. Laboratory exercises will afford students the opportunity to develop skills in various practices designed to study the morphology, physiology and practical value of nonpathogenic microorganisms, including sterile technique.
