Street and Protest Art

In the contemporary art world, street art can no longer be rejected as mere graffiti or vandalism. Street art has become a signifier of our contemporary world, as well as a source of civic pride and socio-political engagement. This viable form of public art has contributed to the success of communities in an ever-changing urban environment. This course will introduce students to the history of Street and Protest art around the globe from the early 20th century to the present. Through course lectures, class discussions, and writing assignments, students will investigate the emergence of street and protest art from its early beginnings to its present state as a contemporary cultural phenomenon. Students will take part in a field trip to locations throughout New York City to view street art.
