Emergent Literacy

Supporting the development of strong readers relies on a strong foundation in phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency. This course introduces teaching candidates to scientifically based reading research (SBRR) important in emergent literacy skills such as basic concepts of print and the alphabetic principle, phonics including the importance of decoding and automaticity, and reading fluency involving explicit instruction and the importance of accountability when promoting silent reading fluency. Emphasis will be on authentic learning experiences and diversity in children's literature. Teaching majors must earn a C or higher to meet the teaching program expectations. Prerequisites: EDUC-230.
