Examines the impact of social context (family, community, school system) and social location (ethnicity/race, gender, social class) on education in the urban United States. Students are encouraged to reflect critically on topics such as the dynamics of race, class, and gender in education; the impact of cultural/social capital on educational outcomes; and the changing roles of private and parochial education. <i>Fulfills social science core.
