Catalog description

Students develop and utilize scientific, evidence-based research on language and literacy development to support the academic success of multilingual learners in grades 7-12 in the content areas (Art, Music, English Language Arts, World Languages, Mathematics, History, and the Sciences). Building on theory, research, and practice from the field of multilingualism, language acquisition, and education, students learn about the process of language and literacy development of diverse children in secondary education who are exposed to more than one language and the cultural contexts in which this development occurs. Students design lessons including English phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics to support the academic success and content/disciplinary language development of multilingual learners. The course examines language and cultural diversity and addresses political, social, and educational questions that involve power, place, and privilege, and how this shapes the schooling and communities of diverse groups. The course requires clinical practice with multilingual students.
