Catalog description

Introduces the theoretical, conceptual, historical, and scientific foundations of evidence-based research in early reading development for PK-3rd grade. Examines essential components of early literacy, including concepts of print, phonological awareness, phonics, word recognition, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, and explores their relationship to other aspects of literacy such as language development and writing and spelling. Provides a research-based understanding of the cognitive, sociocultural, linguistic, and motivational influences on early literacy and language acquisition. Topics include the interpretation of reading research; contributions of cognitive psychology to the study of the reading process; language development; the neurobiological foundations of learning to read; literacy assessment for universal screening, instructional planning, and progress monitoring within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS); the implementation of scientifically grounded, evidence-based practices and high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) across components of reading and writing instruction; and strategies for integrating these components within culturally and linguistically diverse early elementary classrooms. The course requires clinical practice with PK-3rd grade students.
