Surveys the development of Western art music from the Medieval period through the Baroque era (c. 500-1750). Explores how music functioned within religious, political, and cultural institutions, from the liturgical traditions of medieval monasteries to the elaborate courts and churches of the Baroque world. Topics include Gregorian chant, the rise of musical notation, the emergence of polyphony, Renaissance humanism, and the flourishing of Baroque genres such as opera, cantata, and concerto. Through listening, score study, and historical readings, students examine the works of composers while learning to connect musical style with broader historical forces. <i>Closed to students who have taken MU 300.</i>
