Catalog description

Guided by the Universal Apostolic Preference, 'Caring for our Common Home', students are introduced to the science of how humans have changed the Earth. Using systems theory, students learn about the Earth system including the cycling of energy and matter through these systems. The relationship between human activity and the resiliency capacities of ecological systems are studied to help students understand major environmental issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and water availability and the connections of these topics with environmental justice. Topics covered include ecology and evolution, the climate system, and planetary boundaries. Students complete a research and/or creative project to better understand the environmental justice connections with a topic of their choice. <i>Fulfills natural science core. Same course as CH 114.
