An introduction to the human genome, including the structure, function, and evolution of the genome. Students explore techniques of genome-wide analysis, applications of genomics findings to questions of human health, and ethical issues surrounding the acquisition and sharing of human genome sequences. Topics include similarities and differences in genetic sequences among individuals; identification of genes that cause inherent human diseases and cancer; use of genome sequences to track human ancestry; and use of genomic sequencing to identify microbes that live on and in the human body in healthy and diseased states.
