Adult Guardianship Project

Catalog description

This course offers 3 graded experiential learning credits for weekend JD students and students whose non-traditional schedules do not allow them to participate in a legal clinic or externship. The Adult Guardianship Project allows 711-license eligible law students the opportunity to represent real clients seeking guardianship of adult family members. The course requires three two-hour lecture components covering the requisite substantive areas of law as well as biweekly office hours for individual casework instruction. Lectures include client interviewing, case management procedures, substantive issues in the Probate Division, hearing advocacy, as well as best practices for working with diverse populations. To be inclusive of more law students, this course is designed to accommodate remote participation as needed given all client meetings and court appearances will be held on Zoom. Students must be eligible to appear in Court under Supreme Court Rule 711. Students who have successfully completed a minimum of 43.0 credit hours at the School of Law may enroll in the course.
