Catalog description

The course focuses on nuclear energy in the 21st century. It reviews the basic history and physics of nuclear energy, with emphasis on its unique attributes and challenges. Humanitarian applications of ionizing radiation, such as reactors for materials science research, nuclear medicine, and security initiatives, are discussed. The scientific, technological, and economic basis for fission reactors, and the state of the art in reactor technology and safety, are discussed. New concepts, such as advanced liquid metal reactors, small modular reactors, and laser/magnetic fusion energy production are also included. Note, concepts from Modern Physics and Calculus are frequently used in the course.
