Course Description: This course is designed to introduce M4 students to the fundamentals of quality improvement, patient safety, and the essential components comprising a culture of safety embedded within the care of patients and health systems. Additionally, the course will equipe students with the knowledge and skills to provide safe, timely, equitable, e9ective, and e9icient patient-centered care. This is a self-pace and self-directed learning opportunity that students will engage in. Goals: Goals: The purpose of this selective is for fourth-year medical students to build introductory knowledge and skills in the care and management of patients through the lens of quality improvement and patient safety. Objectives: Course Objectives: Upon completion of this selective course, the student will be able to identify and apply specific knowledge and skills in safely caring for and managing patients encountered in the health system. Explain the value of improvement science in health care. Identify the key elements of an effective improvement model. Describe how to lead an improvement project through four key phases. Apply strategies to work effectively with inter-professional colleagues. List the main types of errors and identify ways providers can improve safety for patients. Define a culture of safety and discuss how teamwork/communication can promote a strong safety culture. Explain the responsibilities of clinicians and health care systems in optimizing population-level outcomes with available resources. Describe several leadership characteristics and leadership approaches that can be effective in healthcare. Identify at least four skills to improve clinical interactions with parents.
