This course is designed to provide senior medical students a comprehensive experience in caring for and managing patients with infectious disease disorders in the inpatient and outpatient setting. This course consists of a four-week sequence of curricular activities focusing on medical knowledge and clinical skills in an inpatient and outpatient setting to include Hands-on Experience: Supervised evaluation and management of patients with infectious disease disorders in an in- and out-patient setting by faculty and fellows; and Self-Directed Learning: Focused review of topics related to the management of patients with infectious disease disorders seen using the library and online resources. Goals: The purpose of this selective is for fourth-year medical students to build comprehensive knowledge and skills in the care and management of patients with infectious disease disorders seen in the Infectious Disease Clinic and the Infectious Disease Consult Service.To provide a comprehensive experience in caring for and managing patients with infectious disease disorders in the inpatient and outpatient setting. Objectives: Upon completion of this elective course, the student will be able to identify and apply specific knowledge and skills in caring for and managing patients with infectious disease disorders encountered in and in- and out-patient setting. Complete a history and physical exam of each patient assigned to them on the Infectious Disease consult service and Infectious Disease Clinic to include the creation of a problem list, treatment plan, patient orders and daily progress notes, as well as document the encounter/visit in the Epic system. Complete a history and physical exam of each new patient assigned to them, present and effectively communicate the information to their attending. Explain, present, and communicate effectively the medical condition pertaining to their patients to the attending physician to include the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment plans. Students will complete and document in Epic the history and physical exam of each patient assigned to them on the Infectious Diseases consult service and in the Infectious Diseases clinic well as all problem lists and treatment plans. Students will perform an H&P on each new patient assigned to them and present the information to their attending. Students will read about the conditions pertaining to their patients and present to the attending physician the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment plans. Students will attend the weekly Infectious Disease conferences and Internal Medicine Grand Rounds.
