GRAPHIC NOVELS AND NARRATIVES

Catalog description

This course introduces students to one or more genres of graphic narrative, including graphic novels, comic books, personal narrative and memoir, graphic journalism, and other non-fiction. Students will learn about the theory and practice of sequential art, trace the evolution of comics as a popular medium for storytelling, and study the authors, artists, works, and movements that have most influenced the genre. Because of Cleveland’s important role in the history of comics, the course highlights the contributions of local writers like Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster (the creators of Superman), Harvey Pekar, and others.
