Reading Minds: Theories of Mind in Literature and the Sciences

Catalog description

This course investigates exchanges between scholars and writers concerning the nature of the human mind. Students will explore how formal accounts of the mind among philosophers and psychologists have influenced artistic practices among writers as well as how literary form shapes theories of mental experience. Students will research scholarship that applies models of the mind from the arts and sciences, consider how those models are applied to ethical decision-making, and articulate how different cultures interpret human motives and decision-making. In doing so, students will develop an informed perspective on the challenges of pluralism in a global society.
