Freshwater Ecology

Catalog description

This course provides an introduction to the physical, chemical, and biological properties of freshwater ecosystems. Emphasis is placed on species interactions among aquatic organisms, including microbes, plants, and animals under varying abiotic conditions. Comparisons between lentic (ponds, lakes, wetlands) and lotic (streams, rivers) as well as natural and man-made systems are discussed, and human impacts on fresh waters are investigated. Field sampling of various freshwater habitats is conducted during the laboratory component to complement lecture topics. Weekend field trips may be required. 3 lecture hours, and 2 lab hours. Course fee: $30. Prerequisite(s): CHEM 111 , MATH 171 , and one of the following pairs: BIOL 288 and one of BIOL 330 , BIOL 341 , or BIOL 342 ; or ENSC 201 and BIOL 251 Corequisite(s): None
