Whose Art is it? Art and Music in the Age of Connectivity

Crosslisted With: MUSC 339 Both art and music are a means of expression that involve content; content that reflects, analyzes, appreciates, incites and celebrates culture. But the line between appropriation and appreciation isn’t clear and is becoming murkier in this age of connectivity. In this Perspectives course, students will explore these relationships by investigating historic and contemporary art and music (through considerations such as Western artists ‘borrowing’ from Non-Western sources and Non-Western artists working within Western canons) and how artists, musicians and various cultural groups perceive such work. Students will collaboratively select artists and musicians to research and create a visual work inspired by their research that plays with the line between appropriation and appreciation, determining who ‘owns’ the work and the role of intent.
