Catalog description

This course teaches students about the use of the scientific method to develop, test, and implement interventions and policies relevant to the social work profession, the areas of mental health and social services. The broad research approach most relevant to intervention development, testing, and implementation is experimental clinical trials. Correspondingly, this course is dedicated to introducing doctoral students to the core principles of clinical trials, such as manipulation, causality criteria, the internal and external validity of trials, threats to validity, and ways to address them, as well as quasi-experiments and natural experiments. Students will learn about the Institutional Review Board (IRB) submission process. Pre-requisites of SWK 830, 835, and 840 are required.
