Catalog description

The relationship between health care providers and patients is based on the creation of and interpretation of narratives. The effective medical provider must learn to become skilled in the decoding of stories. Reading literature (fiction and poetry) allows one to empathize with the suffering of another person. This course examines a broad swath of literature to challenge readers' concepts of health and disease, life and death, and normality and disability. This course will explore the power of literature to bring coherence and meaning to lives at moments of great physical and emotional crisis.
