This course provides a practical overview of data mining, modeling, and machine learning techniques tailored to healthcare. Participants will learn how to apply these methods effectively using programming languages, focusing on common healthcare challenges such as patient outcome prediction, resource forecasting, and population health management. The course emphasizes healthcare data's unique constraints and opportunities [e.g., Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations] and how health informaticists can leverage machine learning alongside traditional statistical methods. In this class, students will examine how machine learning and statistical methods utilize data to find underlying patterns useful for many applications such as prediction, classification, and exploratory data analysis.
