Ancient and Medieval Western philosophers presented their schools of thought as ways of life, not mere arm-chair rambling. Between 600 B.C.E. and 1300 C.E., these philosophers put forth arguments about the nature of reality, knowledge, ethics, politics, and the divine that are still applicable to our modern lives. In this course, we analyze the central arguments supporting these views as we explore the works of ancient Greek and Roman philosophers, as well as their intellectual heirs in the medieval Islamic, European, and Byzantine worlds.
