GE-Social Science/Human Diversity This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to key arguments and themes in contemporary gender studies. We will also examine the diverse perspectives of feminist and gender theories, and students explore some influential debates and issues within feminist thought and the ways in which feminist theories critically analyze conceptions of women and gender relations within political, social, and cultural contexts. The course studies feminisms, as well as masculinities, from an interdisciplinary approach. We will study different feminist theories from multiple perspectives, including socialist, psychoanalytic, postcolonial, third wave, and global feminisms. This course is not designed to be comprehensive or to cover all the debates pertaining to gender or feminism. Rather, this course aims to introduce students to key theoretical contributions of feminist thought. The course is focused on theory and is not designed to systematically cover the history of women’s movements, with some discussion of political/social movements as well.
