GE-Human Culture: Literature “This is America, you live in it, you let it happen. Let it unfurl,” declared the novelist Thomas Pynchon in the 1960s. This study of recent American literature will cover the unfurling of our culture from the end of the nineteenth century through Modernism, Postmodernism, and the literature of today. A major theme of this class will be American identities: how do race, class, and gender shape writers’ perspectives? Can you talk about a monolithic American literature when there are so many versions of America described in these texts? You will read major novels, poetry, and drama in their entirety.
