GE-Human Culture: Literature “What, then, is the American, this new man?” That question, posed by an immigrant to the United States on the cusp of independence following the American Revolution, animates the literature of this course, in which you will encounter novels, poetry, and drama written by Puritans, colonists, philosophers, and slaves during the first half of the nineteenth century. Along the way, this course will ask you how these texts have contributed to our sense of America today. Prerequisite: ENGL 17000 with a C or better.
