From popular novels to television dramas and big-budget films, we love to follow in the footsteps of detectives, both real and fictional. When reading crime novels, you become the detective, puzzling your way through dropped clues and avoiding red herrings. In this course, you will begin with Edgar Allan Poe’s Inspector Dupin before crossing the pond to spend time with London’s Sherlock Holmes. Readings and film screenings will bring you up to the present and you will probe questions about crime, race, and the police today. Expect to encounter locked-room mysteries, unidentified bodies, hard-boiled detectives, and more than a few characters from Scotland Yard. Prerequisite: ENGL 15000 or EPP 15000 with a C or better.
