GE-Human Culture: Arts/Human Diversity In this course, you will encounter an historical overview of global art and architecture from the Middle Ages to the Age of Absolutism (ca. 500-1700 CE). You’ll explore the dynamic intersections between art, religion, politics, and culture, and study art forms from early South Asian civilizations, such as the Satavahana and Kushan periods, to the indigenous cultures of the Americas, including the Mayan, Toltec, Inca, and Aztec. The course also covers the Mississippian Culture in North America, Japan’s varied artistic periods from Nara to Momoyama, the Aksumite Empire in Africa, and the Byzantine and Holy Roman Empires. The course ends with an investigation of the Renaissance and Baroque in Europe; movements that are contextualized within a global artistic panorama.
