Faculty supervised research Biology Mission The mission of the Biology Department is to provide a supportive and engaging education that promotes critical thinking, effective communication and independent research skills across biological disciplines. The program strives to foster students that will excel in professional and graduate school, will be competitive as they enter the science work force, and will positively contribute to the global scientific community. Department and Program Description The Biology curriculum is sufficiently diverse to prepare our students for the broad variety of postgraduate opportunities that exist in the field of biology; it is unified so that each student experiences all the relevant areas of biology, and it is current and reflective of the new information and methodology in the field. The Biology major provides a strong grounding in biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics, and then allows flexibility in the selection of electives. The Biology major has two tracks: one for students interested in molecular biology or medicine, including physician assistant, dentistry and veterinary medicine, and a second track for students interested in organismal biology and ecology. The first track has requirements reflective of graduate and medical schools, including organic chemistry and calculus. The organismal track, however, has fewer requirements for chemistry and mathematics. The two tracks share the same foundation courses but diverge
