This course provides an overview of the inner workings of museums and their contributions to the public by collecting, preserving, and interpreting material culture. Art museums are the focus of the course, but other types such as history, ethnographic and science and children’s museums, as well related sites such as zoos and public gardens, will be discussed. Topics covered include: the history of museums as foundation for assessing current challenges in the field, organizational structures, development and marketing, museum education, the role of curators, management and care of collections, exhibition planning and the use of new technologies. Prerequisite: ENG 1002
