Catalog description

These courses focus on reading, discussion, and research, the summation of which is a twenty-five to thirty page thesis in one of three areas: English, American, or non-Western literature. Prerequisite: ENG 1002 ENG-4015 Gendered Storytelling 4 credits (Spring Only) This course explores how the African American literary canon investigates the symbiotic relationship between the white gaze, gender, sexuality, identity, and the Black experience. Using intersecting theoretical frameworks, students will analyze literary depictions of Black womanhood, masculinity, sexuality, and gender performance in Black texts from the late-nineteenth century to the twenty-first century. Additionally, the course integrates ideologies from Black critical theory, Black gender theory, and Black feminist thought to trace how writers use storytelling to exploit and critique racialized gender hierarchies within the Black community.
