Sociological Theory

Catalog description

This course will cover the historical overview of the contributions of classical theorists including, but not limited to, Thomas Hobbes, Auguste Comte, Alexis de Tocqueville, Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, W.E.B. Du Bois, Harriet Martineau, and Jane Adams, providing the foundation for contemporary theory. Further, a survey of the basic ideas of contemporary sociological theory: structuralism, functionalism conflict, symbolic interaction, exchange including but not limited to the works of Parsons, Merton, Mead, Colley Goffman, Coser, Dahrendorf, Marcuse and Habermas and their application to current research will be examined.
