Catalog description
An advanced study of genetic principles and breeding methodologies in crop improvement. Topics include Mendelian genetics, quantitative genetics, population genetics, molecular markers, genomic selection, gene expression, epigenetics, and modern breeding techniques. The breeding component covers selection methods, hybridization, backcrossing, inbreeding, heterosis, breeding for disease resistance, and biotechnological approaches including marker-assisted selection and genetic transformation. Emphasis is placed on understanding inheritance patterns, heritability, genetic diversity, and practical applications in developing improved crop varieties. This course is designed for advanced biology majors and pre-professional students preparing for graduate studies or careers in plant breeding, genetics, or agricultural biotechnology.
